Pythagorhythm

Pythagorhythm is an interactive-multi-user-music creation installation with two dozen touch-responsive sensors allowing users to remix sounds and change the sound-responsive led lighting. Because of its configuration, it encourages teamwork, collaboration and interactive between participants. Featuring music by Longwalkshortdock.

Presented at Luminous Paths: Nanaimo’s 150 & Beyond (Jan 22 - Feb 17, 2025); Bass Coast, Shambhala, Beakerhead, Otherworld and IMBY Festivals, BC. Canada (2017-18).

The Pythagorhythm can be experienced at the Artcade (706 Fort St, Victoria) when not at a special event or festival.

The Experience:

Participants approach a large triangle shaped structure, glowing with LED lights. They place their hand on the railing, triggering a sound loop to play and the lights respond in time to the sounds. Placing their other hand on the railing adds a second, different sound loop to the mix. Another participant joins in, adding a third loop, this one a thumpy beat. They both begin to bob their heads, and in time, shift their hands to new sensors along the railing, changing the soundscape and remixing the song. Every sound stays in time, and in key, making even the most musically-hopeless participant feel like a musician.
